Prioritizing “Agile Response to Emerging Public Health Emergencies and Protecting People from Health Risks

 

 

Osong, 1st of April 2024 - The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced its Policy Plan 2024 on February 19, aiming for “Agile Response to Emerging Public Health Emergencies and Protecting People from Health Risks.” 

 

The first significant announcement, following the downgrade of the COVID-19 alert level from 'Serious' to 'Warning', underscores the KDCA’s commitment to becoming a leader in health security and ultimately achieving a healthy society.

 

Commissioner Jee, in highlighting the plan’s objectives, emphasized, "The KDCA will promptly and comprehensively address future health emergencies while ensuring strong protection of public health against daily risks. We will prioritize and implement nine key tasks for 2024 in alignment with this Policy Plan.”

To Take Global Health Security Leadership and Build a Healthy Society

Prepare a strategy to respond to 1 million infectious disease cases per day

Build infrastructure for rapid development of vaccines and therapeutics after the declaration of PHEIC with pandemic potential

Ensure a healthy life for all to prepare for a super-aged society

Key Tasks

1. Proactively preparing for and responding to infectious disease outbreaks

       Conduct close surveillance and precise risk prediction

       Enable rapid testing and advanced epidemiological investigations

       Implement big data-based disease control measures and ensure flexible medical responses

       Establish an advanced preparedness and response system for the next pandemic

2. Controlling and eliminating infectious disease risk factors

       Expand national immunization coverage and strengthen the National Immunization Program (NIP)

       Effectively control potential threats of infectious disease transmission

       Combat major infectious diseases by enhancing screening and prevention measures

       Strengthen the management of healthcare-associated infections and antimicrobial resistance

3. Preparing for diseases and protecting vulnerable groups to healthcare in a super-aged society

       Strengthen community-based noncommunicable disease (NCD) prevention and management

       Establish a sustainable life-cycle health survey system

       Provide support for people with rare diseases based on their residence

       Enhance the safety net to prevent injuries and health hazards

4. Enhancing national healthcare research capabilities

       Foster rapid development of vaccines and therapeutics while strengthening support systems

       Conduct research on NCDs to reduce health disparities

       Secure healthcare research data and promote its utilization

 

5. Leading the global public health cooperation

       Enhance global health security capacities and networks

       Strengthen linkages between public health policy and technology
