Korea Center for Disease Control&Prevention. 1339 Center for Disease Control&Prevetion Call Center. [Who are Contacts?]
1.Contacts
Contacts are individuals who had some form of contact with a confirmed or suspected MERS patient.
- Contacts are determined by epidemiological officers through epidemiological investigation
- The number of confirmed contacts is subject to change following additional reporting, investigation, and monitoring of potential contacts
Depending on the degree of contact, contacts can be classified as either close contacts or casual contacts.
2.Close Contacts
Close contacts are those who had contact with a confirmed or suspected MERS case when symptoms were present.
These include individuals who had the following forms of contact without wearing a mask for protection:
- Stayed within 2m from the case
- Stayed in the same room or space as case
- Came in direct contact with the case’s respiratory discharge(after coughing or sneezing, etc.)
3.Casual Contacts
Casual contacts are those who were in the same space as a suspected or confirmed MERS case and are considered by epidemiological investigators to require monitoring due to the lack of proper protection at the time of suspected contact.
Since such contact would have taken place when the confirmed or suspected case was symptomatic, there is a possible risk of infection due to exposure.
