Prevent yourself from contact with Paederus fuscipes Curtis (Nairobi fly; Burn bug)! What is Paederus fuscipes Curtis? This insect is black and red in color and cannot fly. It is also known as a “Nairobi fly or burn bug” because even slight contact with the insect can cause burn-like wounds! What are the symptoms? The symptoms clear up in 2-3 weeks, and persons with symptoms are not contagious to others! Rashes, blisters, pustules, intense itching, and pain caused by a toxic substance called pederin <Skin rashes and blisters><Scratchy symptoms><Burning sensation> <Conjunctivitis/Keratitis when in contact with the eyes> What to do if you come into contact with Nairobi flies (burn bugs) - Wash the affected area with soap and water immediately upon contact, and apply cold compresses to relieve symptoms! - If the affected area is large or painful, visit a doctor for treatment, as medication may be needed! - Avoid rubbing your eyes and the rash area, as it can cause conjunctivitis and keratitis if the toxin gets into your eyes!
