* Based on case data reported to the KCDC

Figures subject to correction based on findings from epidemiological investigations

The current state* of major local clusters as of today (as of 12:00, 20 July) are as follows:

* The specific figures below may differ from the daily reported statistics (which are based on figures as of 0:00 today) or figures disclosed by local municipalities due to factors such as report timing and differences in the time period considered

Related to an office in Gwanak-gu, Seoul City, 1 additional case was confirmed. In total, 33* cases have been confirmed.

* Seoul = 12 cases, Gyeonggi = 3 cases, Jeonbuk = 2 cases, Jeju = 4 cases, Gwangju = 11 cases, Jeonnam = 1 case

Related to the V Building in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul City, and the Hanwha Life Insurance in Seoul City, epidemiological link has been found between the two clusters, which are now re-categorized under cases related to Gangnam-gu offices (V Building, Hanwha Life). On 18 July, 2 additional cases related to the Hanwha Life Insurance was confirmed. In total, 24* cases have been confirmed.

* V Building = 9 cases, Hanwha Life Insurance = 15 cases

Related to a care facility in Gangseo-gu, Seoul City, 9 facility users were confirmed. Contact management and epidemiological investigation are underway.

As of 0:00, 20 July, there were 22 imported cases, of which, 10 were confirmed at the point of entry, and 12 were confirmed in the community while in mandatory self-quarantine after arrival.

The presumed location of infection acquisition of the 22 new imported cases are: Americas (4) (US 2, Mexico 2), and Asia excluding China (18) (Philippines 9; Pakistan 3; Iraq 2; Kazakhstan 2; Indonesia 1; Kyrgyzstan 1).

KCDC analyzed the last two weeks’ COVID-19 response situation and risk factors.

1) Percentage of cases managed under infectious disease prevention and control system: percentage of new cases that tested positive while under home quarantine

* Figures may change based on findings from ongoing local epidemiological investigation efforts

The routes of transmission of the last two weeks indicate imported cases (59.5%) and local clusters (24.4%) account for a high proportion of new cases. The percentage of cases with uncertain routes of transmission (under investigation) was 8.2%, slightly smaller compared to the previous two weeks.

* New confirmed cases in the last 2 weeks, categorized by route of transmission (634 reported cases between 7 July 0:00 ~ 20 July 0:00) : imported cases 377 (59.5%), local clusters 155 (24.4%), under investigation 52 (8.2%), related to imported cases 3 (0.5%), etc.

- Local cluster infections are decreasing, but small-scale transmissions continue to occur related to door-to-door sales, nursing homes, etc. in the Chungcheong, Honam, and Seoul metropolitan areas.

Analyzing the age of confirmed cases for the last 2 weeks, the percentage of confirmed individuals in their 20s and 30s and the percentage of confirmed individuals aged 60 and above are decreasing, while the percentage of confirmed individuals in their 40s and 50s slightly rose due to additional confirmed cases related to door-to-door sales.

In response to the recent rise in the number of imported cases, KCDC stated that it designated 2 additional countries as countries subject to strengthened infectious disease prevention and control starting today (4 countries 6 countries), and stated that it will continue to formulate practical management plans to prevent importation of cases from abroad.

- Regarding the 2 additional countries that were designated as countries subject to strengthened infectious disease prevention and control today, the following strengthened infectious disease control and prevention measures will be applied as was the case for the original 4 countries subject to strengthened infectious disease prevention and control:

Limiting visa issuance and flight

Having regular flights fly under 60% seat capacity

Pausing the operation of irregular flights

Limiting re-entry when departing to countries subject to strengthened infectious disease prevention and control

Requiring all foreign nationals to be in possession of a negative PCR test (that was issued within 48 hours prior to the time of departure), which must be submitted upon entry into Korea

        - Based on overseas outbreak situations and the number of imported cases in Korea, risk assessment will be conducted on a regular basis.

- Timely measures, such as screening and quarantine, will be taken to prevent the importation of cases.

In addition, the KCDC asked people to refrain from door-to-door sales-related visits and follow COVID-19 guidelines to prevent local transmission.

- Door-to-door sales require product demos and events during household visits, where participants converse for a long time in close proximity, increasing the risk of transmission.

- Middle-aged and elderly people are asked to not participate in door-to-door sales related meetings and events.

- If you show symptoms after participating in an event related to door-to-door sales, cancel all outings or social gatherings and visit a screening center to get tested.

KCDC asked people to follow properly mask wearing guidelines in everyday life:

Cover your mouth and nose

Do not touch your mask’s surface

Wash your hands before and after putting on your mask

- It is especially important that caregivers and those whose occupation concerns high risk population groups like the elderly carefully follow the guidelines proper mask wearing in everyday life.

KCDC shared the local situation and response progression since the first local case 6 months ago, and stated that it will continue to strive to suppress COVID-19.

- (Deaths) Overall case fatality rate is 2.14% (293); Fatality rate is much higher for the elderly (2.30% for people in their 60s, and 25.17% for people in their 80s); 70%* of deaths were focused around convalescent hospitals, nursing homes, and care facilities.

* Convalescent hospitals 25.6% (75, including 29 from Daegu Hansarang Convalescent Hospital), other medical facilities 25.7%, nursing homes 8.9%, other welfare facilities 4.8%, etc.

- (Virus type) Mostly S, V clades before early April; Recently, mostly GH group

By routes of transmission: local cases 85.3%, imported cases 14.7%; regarding imported cases: Korean nationals 1,389 cases (69.3%), foreign nationals 616 cases (30.7%)

- Local cases: Shincheonji Church related 38.1%, other local clusters 27.1%, contacts of confirmed cases 9.7%, related to imported cases 1.2%, others 9.3%

- Regarding local transmission cases, explosive mass infection centered around a religious group occurred early on, but thanks to the people actively participating in social distancing and following COVID-19 guidelines, the outbreak was contained. Afterwards, social distancing measures were eased to help recover return to daily life.

- However, a cluster infections that began at nightlife facilities in the Seoul metropolitan area in early May spread to other local areas. Sporadic cases continue to occur to this date through chains of transmissions in closed, crowded, and close-contact settings.

- KCDC is employing preemptive measures to prevent large-scale outbreaks in the community such as through thorough epidemiological investigation and testing to quickly detect clusters and active quarantine measures to break the chains of transmission. It is also preparing for a prolonged pandemic situation and will constantly strive to prevent new local cases.
