Revised criteria for COVID-19 isolation release

In consideration of the latest research findings, recommendations of other disease control agencies, and expert opinions including those of the Central Clinical Committee for Emerging Infectious Diseases and the academia, the criteria for ending isolation for COVID-19 cases have been revised, effective December 7, 2020.

Asymptomatic case

Must meet EITHER of the following two criteria:

(Clinical) 10 days have passed since the case was confirmed, without any clinical symptom during this period

(Laboratory) After 7 days have passed since the case was confirmed, two consecutive negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart

Asymptomatic case

Must meet EITHER of the following two criteria:

(Clinical) 10 days have passed since the case was confirmed, without any clinical symptom during this period

(Laboratory) Two consecutive negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart, no clinical symptom since the case was confirmed

Symptomatic case

Must meet EITHER of the following two criteria:

(Clinical) After 10 days have passed since symptom onset, for at least 72 hours, (1) no fever without antipyretic use and (2) improvement of clinical symptoms

(Laboratory) After 7 days have passed since symptom onset, no fever without antipyretic use and improvement of clinical symptoms, followed by two consecutive negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart

Symptomatic case

Must meet EITHER of the following two criteria:

(Clinical) At least 10 days have passed since symptom onset, no fever without antipyretic use for at least 24 hours and improvement of clinical symptoms

* (Severe/critical cases) At least 10 days have passed since symptom onset; no fever without antipyretic use for at least 48 hours and improvement of clinical symptoms

(Laboratory) Two consecutive negative PCR tests at least 24 hours apart, no fever without antipyretic use and improvement of clinical symptoms
