Global HIV/AIDS Statistics

Global efforts to strengthen HIV prevention and treatment programmes are reducing the transmission of HIV. AIDS-related deaths have fallen by 48% since the peak in 2005. From 2010, the annual number of new HIV infections (all ages) has declined by 16% to 1.8 million worldwide. In high-prevalence settings, young women remain at unacceptably high risk of HIV infection, and in lower prevalence settings, the majority of HIV infections occur among key populations: people who inject drugs, sex workers, transgender people, prisoners and gay men and other men who have sex with men. The trends in the annual number of new HIV infections vary by region.
Since 2000, the average rate of AIDS incidence among 34 countries participating in the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) was downward showing 1.0 per 100,000 population in 2015, compared to 2.2 in 2000 and 1.7 in 2010. Although Korea’s AIDS incidence rate was 0.4 in 2015 lower than OECD average, it showed increasing pattern from 0.1 in 2000. The Division of TB＆HIV Control is working towards stopping new HIV infections and increasing accessibility to the HIV treatment through various services including preventive education, anonymous HIV testing, counseling, and public relations activities eliminating prejudices/discriminations on the HIV/AIDS to attain the UNAIDS’s goal ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
