Current status and promotion plan of human tissue donation in Korea, 2017

In Korea, the perception of human tissue donation is lower than that of organ donation (37.0% vs. 97.7%). The number of tissue donors have not increased in recent 5 years. Due to the lack of tissue donors, 74.0% of human tissue depends on import from foreign countries, which may cause the risks of transplant safety, impose a financial burden on the patient, and affect the stability of the supply.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is striving for the improvements in the donor support system to revitalize tissue donation by promoting public awareness of tissue donation including educating government officials and related agencies.
