JoSeon Quarantine Institute which was founded in September 1945 was the beginning of history of Korea National Institute of Health! In these days when the awareness of public health was lacked In the poor environments, we have produced several research accomplishments with our challenge and passion, and we have produced and provided the scientific evidence required for improvements on public health and health care policies. History of Korea National Institute of Health that has strived to protect the national health and overcome the diseases for past 60 years is the beginning and growth of history of public health and medical research in Korea. In 2004, Korea National Institute of Health was expanded and reorganized into the Centers for Disease Control and it opened the era of Osong in 2010! We are equipped with excellent disease research infrastructure at the international level and we are operating the research facilities at the biosafety grade 3, the animal laboratories and the national central human resource banks. We plan to open the national medical and scientific knowledge center and national stem cell regeneration center in the future. Through protection of public health and activation of domestic research, Korea National Institute of Health is writing a new history of challenge for a bigger future. Korea National Institute of Health continues a bigger challenge on the top of the performance of the past! We are performing the missions such as research to cope with and overcome infectious diseases, research of chronic diseases and aging and customized medical research in the future. Because infectious diseases easily spread out, the national response is required to protect the public health and minimize the social losses. Korea National Institute of Health conducts the research on infectious diseases in order to respond to a public health crisis situation such as AI, novel swine origin influenza and foot-and-mouth disease. We are operating the diagnostic and monitoring systems, and conducting the research for the preventive method and vaccine development. In addition, in order to effectively diagnose and monitor the infectious diseases, we have established the organic collaborative system with each local laboratory, and we are operating the national standard laboratories to obtain the final reliable diagnostic results. Furthermore, we are strengthening the international cooperation in the field of public health and medical research through operation of the laboratory being collaborated with the World Health Organization (WHO). Korea is entering the aging society with low birth rate at the fastest speed in the world. Aging and the increase in geriatric disease may lead to the social and economic problems such as rapid increase in the health care expense and the national vitality decline. In order to prevent this situation, the Korea National Institute of Health is conducting the research to identify the causes of chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease and dementia requiring long duration and high expense of treatment, develop and manage the prevention and treatment. In addition, in order to enjoy the healthy and energetic social life with age, we are dedicated to conduct the research on aging and the research on regeneration by utilizing stem cells. Moreover, we are conducting the study on women’s health including infertility related to low birth and menopause. The paradigm of public health is changing from the era of treatment to the era of preventive medicine. The customized medicine is one of biggest topics in the field of public health and medical research. Korea National Institute of Health is finding an effective treatment without any side effects through DNA analysis. Especially, in order to identify the genetic and environmental risk factors for chronic diseases that occur a lot in Korean people, we are conducting the Korean genome epidemiology study which is the cohort project targeting the general public. Through Korean genome epidemiology study, we find the health indicators related to Korean health and disease, and we are pursuing the prediction, prevention and realization of customized medicine on the basis of this scientific evidence. We have established a national infrastructure of human resources for public health and medical research through National biobank of Korea, and we will give an impetus to the field of future public health and medical research through the establishment of infrastructure including the National Medical Science Center to integrate research resources and clinical research data, and the National stem cell research center to overcome a rare incurable diseases and study the stem cell regeneration. Now, we would like to aim at a global leader leading the public health research and grow into a world class public health and medical research institute! In order to achieve these goals, we are giving a shape to the development plan through five strategies such as pursuing values of openness, collaboration, challenge, future and CREATE. First of all, we achieve the advancement of infrastructure of public health research. We lead the creative research to respond to the future. We enhance the planning and management of public health and medical research. We develop new technologies of public health and medical research. We strengthen the capacity for domestic and international cooperation. And, research on healthy aging to prepare for aging. Research on acute and chronic diseases based on climate and environmental change. Research on response to crisis of newly transformed infectious diseases. Research on chronic diseases, low birth • women’s health. Research on rare incurable diseases and stem cell regeneration. Research on Korean genomics to realize the customized medicine. We are promoting the ACE- NIH as the focused project. In order to realize the vision, Korea National Institute of Health will perform the development plan successfully and we will brighten the future of world public health and medical research in the future. Public health and medical research increasing the value of life! Under this situation, we are protecting the health of Korean people and increasing the status of public health and medical research in Korea. And now, we continue a bigger challenge toward world class research institute and brighten the happy future of the mankind!
