08 Laboratory surveillance service for
influenza and respiratory viruses

By detecting the prevalence of infectious respiratory diseases and establishing the causes of acute respiratory infections and analyzing the trends of the properties of circulating viruses, we provide useful information required for the treatment and prevention of the diseases to the public and infectious disease specialists.

Purpose of service

  • The purpose of the laboratory surveillance service for influenza and respiratory viruses is to establish the causes of acute respiratory diseases from patients at primary hospitals and analyze the trends and properties of circulating viruses to provide the useful information required for the treatment and prevention of the diseases to the public and infectious disease specialists.
    • 2001 Launched laboratory surveillance service for influenza, 2005 Launched laboratory surveillance service for acute respiratory infections
    • 2009 Integrated the services into laboratory surveillance service for respiratory viruses
    • 2010 Changed the name of the service to laboratory surveillance service for influenza and respiratory viruses
    • 2013 Cooperative medical institutions enrolled both clinical and laboratory surveillance were newly designated.

Description of service

  • In cooperation with medical institutions (primary hospitals) and Institutes of Environmental Health, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention conducts influenza and respiratory virus genetic testing on patients with acute respiratory infections.
  • Target virus : Influenza virus, parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, RS virus, rhinovirus, coronavirus, metapneumovirus, and bocavirus

Information disclosure

  • We post the incidence of influenza and respiratory viruses each week on the website of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (http://cdc.go.kr) so that the public and infectious specialists can have access to useful information of health care and disease treatment.
