12 National Culture Collection
for Pathogens (NCCP)

The National Culture Collection for Pathogens (NCCP) establishes as the national pathogen resources bank in order to the promotion of R&D in in preparedness, diagnosis and therapy of infectious human disease.

Introduction

  • The National Culture Collection for Pathogens (NCCP) is composed of 4 main work, such as the pathogen resources networks, resourece development, standardization and distribution & utilization
    • Collecting, preserving, and managing clinical isolates for pathogen resources in Korea
    • Searching and discovering emerging and re-emerging pathogens
    • Developing resources, aiming for the development of diagnoses and vaccines, etc.
    • Operating a deposit system of R&D achievements
    • Promoting international resource exchange

Progress

  • 1972

Established regulations for “Preservation and provision of pathogenic microorganisms and toxins”

  • 2004

Affiliated to the World Federation of Culture Collections (WFCC)

  • 2005

Introduced the high risk pathogen management system

  • 2008

Newly founded three regional banks (Korea Biobank Project)

  • 2009

Certified for Quality Management System (ISO 9001)

  • 2010

Relocated to Osong Bio-Health Science Technopolis

  • 2011

Concluded an MOU for resources exchange and cooperation with DSMZ, Germany

  • 2012

Created the Pathogen Resources Management TF
Designated as a bio research resources deposit/registration/presercation agency by the Ministry of Health & Welfare

  • 2016

The Act on the Promotion of Collection, Management, and Utilization of Pathogen Resources (Act No. 13992) enacted

Major Duties

  • Network
    • Operate and manage the field-specific pathogen resource banks
    • Exchange pathogen resources and information with domestic and overseas resources banks
  • Resources
    • Collect and manage of variety resource strains
    • Characterize and authenticate resources with systematic management
  • Standardization
    • Standardization of pathogen resources and their information
    • Standardization of management system documents and materials
  • Distribution and Utilization
    • Operate the Pathogen-resource Information Management system(PIMS) and pathogen resource banks
    • Distribute consumer- oriented recourses
Network
Expansion and operation of designated baris for pathogen collections
Collaborating and Networking with domestic and international institutions
Resources&Development
Operation of pathogen resources information management systems
User-oriented resource distribution with an advanced feedback system
Distribution and Utilization
Collection and management of resource strains
Characterization and authentication of pathogens with systematic management
Standardization
Standardization of pathogens and their information
Standardization of documents and materials for the management system

Distribution of pathogen resources

  • NCCP manages and distributes pathogen resources(bacteria, fungi, virus, etc) so that researchers in various fields can utilize them for research.
    • Pathogens isolated from clinical patients
    • Statutory infectious diseases and high risk pathogens
    • Characteristic information of pathogens
(serotype, genotype, antibiotic resistance, clinical/epidemiological information, etc.)
    • Derived materials of pathogens (nucleic acid, antigen, antibody, cellular materials, etc.)

Institutions equipped with proper research facilities and educated researchers meeting the biosafety criteria can be supplied with pathogens.

Deposit of pathogen resources

  • General deposit
    • Researchers may deposit the pathogens and derived resources with actual or potential values (germsbacteria, fungi, virus, etc.) to the NCCP so that other researchers can have access to or utilize the pathogen resources.
    • Deposit promote R&D activities in health and medical services and are a driving force to become an entity with abundant pathogen resources. It all begins with the interest and cooperation of researchers.
    Pathogen resources deposit
collection → Quality confirmation → Resource registration → Procuction → preservation → Distribution → Public relations
  • Deposit of R&D output
    • Pathogens collected from national R&D projects can be openly utilized to other researchers in accordance with relevant laws and regulations. The depositor may suspend the disclosure of pathogens. The depositor is responsible for the quality of deposited pathogens.
  • Relevant laws
    • Act on the Acquisition, Management, and Utilization of Biological Research Resources (Act No. 14079)
    • Act on the Promotion of Collection, Management, and Utilization of Pathogen Resources (Act No. 13992, 2016.2.3. Establishment)
