Surveillance of Bacterial Infectious Disease Pathogens
Overview
- To monitor the current status of bacterial infectious diseases in the country, the system for monitoring waterborne and foodborne infectious disease pathogens (EnterNet) and respiratory bacterial infection pathogens (AriNet) is being operated.
- The pathogens collected through the operation of the monitoring system are utilized for early prediction of changes in the outbreak of bacterial infectious diseases and for preventing their spread through pathogen characteristic analysis.
Waterborne and Foodborne Infectious Disease Pathogen Monitoring Project (EnterNet)
- Collaborate with over 70 cooperative hospitals and 17 provincial and metropolitan health and environment research institutes to collect pathogens weekly and analyze key characteristics
- A laboratory-based pathogen monitoring system that comprehensively analyzes the outbreak region, timing, outbreak type, and pathogen characteristics to early predict and respond to the spread of infectious diseases
Target pathogens
Types of target pathogens
Salmonella, pathogenic Escherichia coli, Campylobacter, Shigella, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Vibrio cholerae, Clostridium perfringens, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Listeria monocytogenes, Yersinia enterocolitica
Analysis items
: serotype, toxin type, antibiotic resistance trends, genotype, etc.
System diagram
This image shows the step-by-step process of how infectious disease test results are reported and relayed to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
Step 1: Cooperative Hospitals (Clinics)
- Provide specimens from suspected patients such as those with diarrhea.
- Receive test results.
Step 2: Health and Environmental Research Institute
- Conduct tests on specimens received from cooperative hospitals (clinics).
- Report results weekly and relay them to other institutions.
Step 3: EnterNet Integrated Information Network
- Collect test results from the Health and Environmental Research Institute on a weekly basis.
- Share the results weekly.
Step 4: Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA)
- Aggregate and manage results through the EnterNet Integrated Information Network.
- Provide positive specimens (bacteria/viruses) if needed.
- Based on the results, provide integrated information feedback, including analysis on antibiotic resistance, serotypes, etc., to lower-level institutions.
Summary Interpretation
Specimens are transferred from cooperative hospitals (clinics) → Health and Environmental Research Institute → EnterNet → KDCA,
and test results and analysis information are relayed back to each stage for field response and policy decision-making.

Surveillance Project for Respiratory Bacterial Infection Pathogens (Ari-Net)
- A laboratory-based surveillance system focused on respiratory bacteria, operated to predict and respond to community respiratory infectious disease outbreaks early
- Weekly collection and analysis of pathogens isolated from pneumonia patients to analyze changes in pathogen distribution, epidemic patterns, and pathogen characteristics
Target pathogens
Types of target pathogens
Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis, Haemophilus influenzae, Bordetella pertussis, Streptococcus pyogenes (scarlet fever), Legionella pneumophila, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, etc.
Analysis items
: Serotype, toxin type, genetic type, antibiotic resistance trends, etc.
System diagram
This image explains the step-by-step reporting process of respiratory bacterial test results, starting from cooperative healthcare institutions and ending at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA).
Step 1: Cooperative Healthcare Institutions (Primary and Secondary)
- Provide specimens and clinical information to the receiving institution.
- Receive test results and feedback on the occurrences.
Step 2: Receiving Institution
- Perform respiratory bacterial tests and specimen separation.
- Include management role for participating healthcare institutions.
- Report results to ARINET weekly.
Step 3: ARINET (Integrated Disease and Health Management System)
- Collect results from each receiving institution weekly.
- Deliver test results and occurrence information to the KDCA.
Step 4: Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA)
- Receive and comprehensively manage specimens on a weekly basis.
- Provide occurrence information to receiving institutions and healthcare facilities.
Summary Interpretation
Specimens and test results are reported in the order of cooperative healthcare institutions → receiving institution → ARINET → KDCA.
The KDCA then relays the occurrence information back to support its use by local healthcare institutions and research facilities.
