Antimicrobial resistance
Meaning
- A phenomenon in which bacteria develop a way to resist specific antibiotics, rendering the drug ineffective
Causes of occurrence
- Antibiotic resistance includes "inherent resistance that bacteria naturally possess” and “resistance that occurs as a result of the adaptation process of bacteria due to antibiotic use.”
- With the increase in antibiotic use, the opportunities for bacteria to acquire antibiotic resistance also increase, and inappropriate use of antibiotics is a contributing factor to the occurrence and proliferation of antibiotic resistance.
Reasons why antibiotic resistance prevention and management are necessary
Difficulty in treating bacterial infections
- When antibiotic resistance occurs, the range of effective treatment options is reduced, posing a serious threat to the treatment outcomes of immunocompromised individuals or patients with severe infections.
- The prolonged duration of treatment required due to antibiotic-resistant infections increases the burden of disease on both individuals and society.
Possibility of transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria
- When antibiotic-resistant bacteria occur, they multiply within the body, leading to the emergence of new resistant bacteria through gene transfer between bacteria.
- Antibiotic-resistant bacteria can arise in healthcare, agriculture, livestock, fisheries, and the environment, and can be transmitted through contact with infected people or animals, as well as through the consumption of contaminated food and water.
Guidelines for preventing antibiotic resistance
Using antibiotics properly and only when necessary
- Antibiotics should only be used after being prescribed by a professional.
- Do not use leftover antibiotics or antibiotics prescribed to others.
- Remember that antibiotics are treatments for bacterial infections and are unnecessary for viral infections.
-
Bacterial infectious diseases
- Pneumonia
- Tonsillitis
-
Viral infectious diseases
- Cold, runny nose
- Influenza (flu)
Preventing the unnecessary use of antibiotics and the transmission of antibiotic-resistant bacteria through infection prevention
- Practice proper handwashing and cough etiquette.
- Get appropriate vaccinations to prevent infectious diseases.
Prevent the occurrence and transmission of antibiotic resistance in the environment.
- Return any remaining antibiotics to the pharmacy or health center for safe disposal.
